Frequently Asked Questions
Our platform handles a large portion of global marine fuel transactions. In addition our in-house market reporting team sources fuel prices directly from market players, including suppliers, brokers, traders, agents and others. This enables us to collect and validate over 500 pricing points per day, allowing us to accurately calculate fuel prices in over 100 locations every 10 minutes.
ENGINE price benchmarks are different from most other offerings in the frequency that they are produced with and transparency that is offered to the user. Our marine fuel prices are calculated using real market data with every price point going into the benchmark also visible to the platform user. ENGINE prices are updated every 10 minutes meaning that customers can benchmark their transactions against the market at the time of booking the fuel, rather than with a single benchmark price for the day. Moreover, our benchmarks rely on the most recent market data only, meaning that we only publish bunker prices for ports and fuels for which we have a minimum amount of very recent data.
Our platform offers both spot and forward prices. Forward prices are produced using historical differentials between the spot price and the underlying paper contract.
Most locations on the platform show delivered prices. However, in certain ports, mainly in Americas, the ex-wharf price is shown. This is to avoid the price distortions caused by the varying amount of barging fees that buyers have to pay depending on the quantity lifted.
ENGINE benchmark prices indeed only take into account pricing data with specific quantity and lead time ranges, depending on location and fuel grade. Transactions that were concluded on either too short or too long payment terms are specifically excluded from the price benchmark.
