ABS approves KRISO's nuclear-powered container ship design
The American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) has granted an approval in principle (AiP) to the Korea Research Institute of Ships & Ocean Engineering's (KRISO) design for a small modular reactor (SMR)-powered container ship.

An SMR is a compact, factory-built nuclear reactor designed to provide flexible and scalable power generation.
KRISO's concept features a 15,000 TEU container ship powered by a molten salt reactor (MSR), a type of nuclear reactor that uses molten salt as its coolant.
The AiP confirms the technical feasibility and safety of the design. KRISO will now advance the project through basic and detailed ship design, supporting the future demonstration and commercialisation of SMR-powered vessels.
