Amazon dry season increases navigational risks in Brazil

Parts of the Amazon basin could experience exceptionally low water levels during the 2026 dry season, according to a forecast by marine insurer Gard.

Falling river levels could reduce navigable depths and under-keel clearance, increasing grounding risks as silting and sediment movement alter channels and "expose previously submerged hazards", the report noted.

While these limitations are unlikely to have a significant impact on bunker fuel availability, they could increase congestion around the ports, according to a trader.

Manaus and Itacoatiara, two Brazilian ports where vessels can bunker, could face congestion and operational disruptions as river levels decline, the trader said.

For shipowners and operators, this could lead to longer waiting times and additional operational costs.

Ships and barge convoys carrying fuel products could also become more vulnerable to attacks during the dry season, Gard said, urging crews to remain vigilant.
