Amogy is currently converting a conventional fuel-powered tugboat with its 1-megawatt ammonia-to-power system.
The ammonia-to-power system feeds liquid ammonia stored onboard the vessel to a reactor system – a set of reactors filled with catalysts. The reactor system later converts ammonia into hydrogen, which is then used to power onboard fuel cells to produce electricity for propulsion.
The company has previously demonstrated a similar ammonia technology on a tractor and plans to retrofit an inland barge with its ammonia-to-power system.
The retrofitted tugboat will be making an initial voyage in an inland waterway in New York later this year, Amogy said.
