Classification society DNV has granted approval for the integration of two folding rotor sails from London-based Anemoi Marine Technologies into the design of a medium-range (MR) tanker.

The approved design was developed jointly by Anemoi Marine, Chinese shipbuilder Guangzhou Shipyard International (GSI), and tanker operator Hafnia, with the goal of simplifying the installation of rotor sail technology on MR tankers.
During the project, the partners tackled a range of technical, structural, operational and regulatory challenges associated with fitting rotor sails on MR tankers, where limited deck space, cargo-handling requirements and safety considerations can complicate adoption.
The design incorporates Anemoi’s 35-metre folding rotor sails and is intended to accelerate the uptake of wind-assisted propulsion technologies across the broader tanker market.
