Antwerp-Bruges’ conventional bunker sales down 8% in 2024
The port’s total conventional bunker sales declined amid a sharp drop in MGO sales, while HSFO has not been this popular in years.

Changes in Antwerp-Bruges bunker fuel sales from 2023 to 2024:
- Total sales down by 666,000 mt to 7.4 million mt
- Fuel oil sales up by 156,000 mt to 6.1 million mt
- MGO sales down by 822,000 mt to 1.4 million mt
Consolidated fuel oil bunker sales in the Port of Antwerp-Bruges increased by 3% in 2024, and VLSFO sales by 8%.
At 2.8 million mt in 2024, VLSFO sales in 2024 were at their highest level in three years. The third quarter was especially strong with 739,000 mt sold.
MGO sales declined by a massive 37% on the year. The first quarter was the best with 417,000 mt, and was followed by three quarters of 318,000-330,000 mt.
HSFO has been growing in popularity in major ports around the world as the global scrubber-fitted fleet continues to expand. That has also been evident in Antwerp-Bruges, which noted its strongest HSFO sales quarter since records started in 2022, with 604,000 mt sold in the fourth quarter.
The port authority reported sales of bio-blended bunker fuels in the third and fourth quarters of 2024, totalling 35,000 mt. But it did not give details about the blend ratios sold in the port.
