The trials will be conducted over a three-month period, during which Ardmore Shipping wants to see whether the additive can reduce consumption and be stable when it is blended with VLSFO onboard the Ardmore Seahawk.
According to the firm, the additive can enhance a bunker fuel's atomisation and oxygenation during combustion, resulting in more energy being released from the fuel. It can be used with HSFO and biofuel blends as well.
The additive has been used in fuels powering vehicles in other sectors like heavy trucks. Fuelre4m claims that fuel consumption can be reduced by 15-20% through better combustion.
