Switzerland-based renewable energy firm Axpo has signed a 10-year agreement to charter an LNG bunker vessel from a joint venture between Italian gas firm Gas and Heat and shipyard San Giorgio del Porto shipyard.

The vessel will be constructed at the San Giorgio del Porto shipyard and is expected to be delivered by 2025. Once operational, it will carry out ship-to-ship (STS) LNG bunker operations off Naples, and also transfer LNG to onshore trucks, Axpo said.

The vessel can also be used to transport bio-LNG and ammonia cargoes in the future.

The global LNG bunker delivery vessel fleet is currently made up of 45 vessels, with another 8-12 expected to join this year, DNV data shows.
