The 7,500 cbm-capacity vessel Northern Purpose can operate on both LNG and conventional marine fuels. It has also been fitted with rotor sails and an air lubrication system to reduce fuel consumption.

The vessel will transport liquefied CO2 from industrial customers across Northwest Europe to Norway for permanent geological storage.

Northern Lights is a carbon capture and storage joint venture formed by Equinor, Shell and TotalEnergies. The venture has already secured transport agreements with Danish wind power company Ørsted and Norwegian chemicals producer Yara.

The first two vessels in the series - Northern Pioneer and Northern Pathfinder - were built by Dalian Shipbuilding Industry, while the third and fourth vessels, Northern Phoenix and Northern Purpose, were constructed by Dalian Shipbuilding Offshore.
