Biofuel bunker sales in Singapore surged 32% higher in August

September 19, 2023

Singapore sold nearly 1,700 mt/day of bio-bunkers in August, up from 1,300 mt/day in July, according to preliminary figures from the port authority.

Monthly Singapore alternative bunker sales since January 2022

Changes in Singapore alternative fuel sales between July and August:

  • Bio-HSFO sales down from 490 mt to nil
  • Bio-VLSFO sales up from 40,000 mt to 52,500 mt
  • LNG sales down from 18,000 mt to 15,500 mt
  • Methanol sales down from 300 mt to nil

All of the 52,500 mt of bio-blended bunkers sold was VLSFO blended with a bio component – typically 24% in Singapore. Total biofuel bunker sales across the first eight months of this year stood at 285,000 mt, almost twice as much as Singapore sold through all of last year.

Biofuel blends still only make up a fraction of Singapore's total bunker sales, however. 0.60% its total bunker fuel sales were blended with biofuels in the first eight months of this year.

LNG sales declined by 15% in August after hitting a record high in July. About 500 mt/day of LNG was sold in August, down from 590 mt/day in July.

No methanol sales were recorded in August.
