The company has fitted four 24-meter-long suction sails on Maersk Trieste at EDR Shipyard in Belgium.

In December 2024, the two companies agreed to install 20 suction sails across five medium-range tankers operated by Maersk Tankers. The latest installation marks the completion of the first phase of that agreement.

Wind-assisted propulsion systems (WAPS), such as suction sails, have been gaining popularity among shipowners as they look for technologies that can boost vessel performance and reduce fuel consumption.

The sails draw air across an aerodynamic surface to generate lift and improve propulsive efficiency, helping to reduce fuel consumption and emissions, bound4blue said.
