CCS certifies fully electric newbuild container ship

China Classification Society (CCS) has certified a fully electric newbuild container for Ningbo Ocean Shipping company, built by Jiangxi Shipbuilding in China.

The 740 TEU vessel, Ningyuan Diankun, is fitted with 10 containerised batteries, which can be recharged using shore power or through rapid battery swapping.

It is also equipped with a photovoltaic system “to achieve zero emissions throughout its operations,” CCS said. The vessel has a top speed of 11.5 knots.

CCS provided technical support for the project, including design review and certification.
