Japanese classification society Nippon Kaiji Kyokai (ClassNK) has granted approval in principle (AiP) to an ammonia-capable Panamax bulk carrier featuring a large tank, developed by Planning and Design Center for Greener Ships.

The approval marks the first instance globally of a vessel incorporating IMO Type B tanks installed on the exposed deck, according to ClassNK.

IMO Type C tanks have traditionally dominated due to their advantages in cost and ease of fabrication. However, IMO Type B tanks are increasingly being considered as an alternative, offering improved cargo space utilisation and greater flexibility in vessel outfitting, the classification society added.

Both IMO Type B and Type C tanks are independent, self-supporting cargo containment systems used in gas carriers, differing mainly in pressure tolerance, structural configuration, and secondary barrier requirements.

ClassNK granted the AiP after verifying that the design complies with the applicable regulatory standards.
