The onshore power facility at the Port of Copenhagen will provide electricity to cruise ships at the Oceankaj and Langelinie terminals, as well as to ferries docking at the Sondre Frihavn terminal, according to the European Commission’s European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency (CINEA).

The facility is the largest of its kind in Europe, CINEA noted.

It will allow vessels to meet their electricity needs using green power while docked, eliminating the need to run onboard engines powered by fossil fuels, CINEA stated.

However, the agency has not disclosed the specific source of the renewable electricity.

The project is co-funded by the EU through its Connecting Europe Facility Transport (CEF Transport) programme.
