The vessel, Costa Diadema, used shore power facility at the Ostuferhafen cruise terminal in Kiel for the first time on 7 June, the cruise operator said.
The cruise ship is scheduled to connect to the system in the German port for “all the next 16 calls included in the deployment of the ship until the end of the summer,” the company said.
Shore power has gradually become more widely available in ports. Although it may not drastically impact global shipping emissions, it allows ships to connect to electrical power while in port, thereby reducing shipping emissions around the port area. It also helps to reduce noise pollution in port areas caused by generators.
Costa Cruises is a subsidiary of British-American luxury cruise operator Carnival Corporation.
