Crowley, Port of San Diego to build shoreside charging station for full-electric tugboat
US-based maritime transport company Crowley has partnered with the Port of San Diego to build a shoreside charging station to provide power to its upcoming fully electric tugboat, eWolf.

The charging station will house two energy storage systems “that will allow vessels to recharge quickly while reducing peak loads on the community energy grid,” Crowley said.
The energy storage systems will have battery packs with storage capacity of almost 1.5 megawatt hours (MWh), which have been provided by Norwegian battery technology provider Corvus Energy.
The systems will be equipped with solar cells to support renewable energy use.
The charting station will also be used “to support other electric equipment and vehicle operations, if needed,” Crowley said.
The move “directly aligns with our own efforts and goals to reduce emissions and improve public health in our communities while also supporting efficient and modern maritime operations,” Port of San Diego’s chairman Rafael Castellanos.
The San Diego County Air Pollution Control District, the California Air Resources Board, the US Environment Protection Agency and the US Maritime Administration are also part of the project.
