CSL OWL launches methanol-capable subsea rock installation vessel

Dutch marine contractor CSL OWL has launched the first of two methanol-capable subsea rock installation vessels.

A subsea rock installation vessel is a specialised ship that places rocks on the seabed to protect and stabilise subsea pipelines, cables and other offshore infrastructure.

The vessel, Rock Star, has a carrying capacity of 17,500 mt of rock and can run on either methanol or conventional marine fuel. It is designed to operate in water depths of up to 100 metres.

Upon delivery, the vessel will be deployed to meet demand from the offshore wind sector.

CSL OWL has not disclosed details of its deployment or the shipyard where it was built.

The company is a joint venture between The CSL Group and Offshore Wind Logistics (OWL).
