The multi-purpose workboat - Multi Cat 1908 Electric – can operate in both shallow and deeper waters. Damen claims that it can operate for up to 12 hours on a single charge, and the batteries have a lifespan of up to a decade.
The shipbuilder intends to start the construction of the first workboat in the fourth quarter of this year at its Hardinxveld yard in the Netherlands.
The workboat “has the potential to make a considerable impact on maritime emissions,” Damen Shipyards’ commercial manager Jeroen van Woerkum says.
Although these small-scale electric vessels are unlikely to make much of a difference in reducing global greenhouse gas emissions, they can provide valuable technical and operational experiences for developing bigger electric vessels.
