Damen Shipyard’s air lubrication system is an energy efficiency measure that helps to reduce the vessel’s fuel consumption by 15%, it claims. It does this by creating “a thin layer of air over the flat bottom of a vessel’s hull” that could reduce the vessel’s resistance in the water, and lower its drag and friction, the Dutch shipbuilder adds.

Energy efficiency measures help vessels to improve their Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII) ratings and comply with the Energy Efficiency Existing Ship Index (EEXI).

According to UK-based University Maritime Advisory Services (UMAS), vessels’ CII ratings can be enhanced by implementing operational measures like ship maintenance, waste-heat recovery and retrofits to improve energy efficiency.

“With DACS installed to Danita, Amisco will achieve the CII rating necessary to continue operating in the Baltic Sea in the face of new, stricter emissions regulations,” Damen Shipyard says.
