Finnish engine maker Wärtsilä is expected to complete the ammonia retrofit of Viking Energy this year.
Bunker supplier Azane Fuel has received approval from the Norwegian Directorate for Civil Protection to supply ammonia to the vessel.
The bunkering trial is planned for autumn at Stord, Norway, where 73 mt of ammonia will be delivered through a truck-to-ship operation.
The trial will allow the project partners to test the vessel’s fuel transfer equipment, bunkering procedures and safety systems, and “gain practical experience with truck-to-ship ammonia bunkering.”
Viking Energy is chartered by Equinor and is expected to remain under charter following the retrofit.
