Belgium-based shipping firm EXMAR LPG has ordered two ammonia dual-fuelled gas carriers from South Korea’s Hyundai Mipo Dockyard.
The 46,000-cbm capacity vessels will be equipped with ammonia engines from Swiss marine engine maker Winterthur Gas & Diesel (WinGD) and fuel supply systems from Wärtsilä Gas Solutions.
WinGD is developing two-stroke ammonia-powered engines, and aims to deliver its first dual-fuel ammonia engine by the first quarter of 2025.
EXMAR LPG is a joint venture between EXMAR and maritime firm Seapeak. With over four decades of experience in handling ammonia cargoes, the company plans to apply the extensive knowledge when using ammonia as marine fuel.
