The fuel is palm oil-free and is made from food waste.
The biofuel is supplied by global oil and gas firm Shell in collaboration with German marine fuel supplier Friedrich G. Frommann. It meets the sustainability criteria set out in the European Union’s RED II directive, Hamburg port authority said in a statement.
It will be trialled on three of Flotte Hamburg’s vessels – HafenKapitan, Deepenschriewer III, and Neßsand.
If the trials prove successful, the fuel could be rolled out across the Hamburg fleet, it added.
