December 19, 2024

Delays in incorporating the regulation into the European Economic Area (EEA) Agreement have postponed the implementation of FuelEU Maritime in Norway and Iceland.

The Norwegian Maritime Authority (NMA) confirmed that the necessary legislation would not be in place by the intended date of 1 January 2025.

This means the Norwegian legislation will also not be implemented before the new year, although it is “ready to be adopted," said Alf Tore Sørheim, interim director general of shipping and navigation at the NMA.

In the meantime, Norwegian and Icelandic ports will be treated as non-EU ports, with only 50% of the energy used on trips between these and EU ports being counted under FuelEU rules.
