Italy-based hydrogen equipment manufacturer Hydrocell has chosen the hydrogen fuel cell firm Genevos to retrofit a 17-meter-long wooden boat with a hydrogen fuel cell power system.

Genevos will retrofit the boat, which was formerly a fishing trawler, with a 40-kilowatt marine hydrogen fuel cell power system.

The trawler was originally built in 1978 in France’s Bordeaux. Once retrofitted, it will be used as a passenger vessel. It is slated to start operations in Venice in the second quarter of 2025.

Hydrogen-powered fuel cells can help to decarbonise smaller vessels and boats, but have not yet achieved a technological breakthrough to power large ocean-going vessels.
