German ports handled 3% less cargo volumes in 2022

A total of 279 million mt of cargo was loaded and unloaded across German sea ports in 2022, down from 288 million mt in 2021, according to data from Germany’s Federal Statistics Office.

Sweden and Norway replaced Russia to become the biggest trading partners in German sea ports, the data shows. The US and China followed were the third and fourth biggest.

The total cargo volumes handled in 2022 were significantly lower than pre-pandemic levels of 294 million mt in 2019. Additionally, German ports' container throughput declined by an even bigger 6% on the year.
