An industry coalition has been formally launched to develop a green shipping corridor between India's VO Chidambaranar (VOC) Port and Europe, with a focus on green methanol and green ammonia.

Indian and European officials signed a letter of intent to formally launch the industry coalition, according to India's Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways.

The coalition, which includes the VOC Port Authority, will explore the potential use of green ammonia and green methanol as bunker fuels along the corridor. This will involve assessing fuel availability, potential demand from vessels, and bunkering and storage infrastructure requirements.

It will also identify suitable European ports for the corridor, building on a pre-feasibility study launched in 2025.

The Indian government has not disclosed a timeline for developing the proposed India–EU green shipping corridor.

The latest agreement follows earlier efforts to establish green shipping links between India and Europe.

In April 2025, the Indian government and the Port of Rotterdam Authority announced plans to explore a green shipping corridor between the two countries.

Officials from India and Denmark also attended a pre-feasibility workshop hosted by the Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller Center for Zero Carbon Shipping in May 2026. The workshop examined alternative fuel availability, port and bunkering readiness, and vessel availability on routes between the two countries.
