The two 82,000-dwt vessels will be equipped with dual-fuel ammonia-ready engines from MAN Energy Solutions. The vessels will not be capable of running on ammonia without engine retrofits, but they will be prepared to have 3,000 cbm-capacity ammonia fuel tanks fitted. The order includes an option for two more vessel, and the first vessel is scheduled for delivery in early 2026.
Green ammonia is regarded by some as among the most promising scalable alternative fuels for the shipping industry to achieve zero carbon emissions.
Grieg Maritime is supporting the Norwegian Shipowner’s Association’s climate targets to control a carbon neutral fleet by 2050. The targets require that shipowners will only order ships with zero-emission technology from 2030 onwards.
As the vessels on order with CSSC Huangpu Wenchong Longxue are ammonia-ready, they are “halfway there” to meeting decarbonisation targets, the head of shipowning at Grieg Maritime Group Nicolai Grieg commented.
“They give us the flexibility to be close to emission-free as soon as the fuels are available… We believe in ammonia for these ships. However, we can also look to methanol or carbon capture depending on how the technology develops,” Nicolai Grieg said.
