June 25, 2026

By using cleaner vessels, biofuel, and purchased emissions credits, the pool avoided FuelEU penalties while delivering cost savings for pool partners.

Hafnia said it closed the first quarter of 2026 with more than 170 vessels trading across its pool. Of these, 108 vessels collectively exceeded the emissions limits, but these were balanced through the pooling system.

Since November 2025, vessels entering the pools have had an average age of six years or younger, which, according to the company, has strengthened the platform's competitiveness and earnings potential.

The number of pool partners has increased to 24 across different shipping segments, Hafnia added.

FuelEU Maritime came into effect on 1 January 2025, requiring ships above 5,000 gross tonnes calling at EU ports to progressively reduce the greenhouse gas intensity of the energy they use.

By 30 April 2026, shipping companies had to finalise whether to use pooling, banking, or borrowing to comply with the regulation's first reporting year. Any penalties must be paid before 30 June.
