HD Hyundai Mipo advances LNG bunkering vessel project

September 10, 2025

Classification society Lloyd’s Register (LR) and South Korea’s HD Hyundai Mipo have partnered to develop a 22,000 cbm LNG bunkering vessel.

The project focuses on delivering a safe, regulation-compliant and commercially viable design to meet the growing demand for LNG bunkering.

The vessel’s larger delivery capacity could help cut bunkering times and reduce operating costs by lowering the frequency of operations. However, its increased size may pose limitations in certain ports, making careful design adjustments essential, according to LR.

Under the agreement, LR will carry out a full drawing appraisal and grant approval in line with its classification rules and international standards.

In a separate development, HD Hyundai Mipo has also secured Approval in Principle (AiP) from the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) for its 30,000 cbm LNG carrier and bunkering vessel design.

This vessel will be capable of transporting LNG as cargo while also supplying it as bunker fuel to a broad range of receiving ships. ABS confirmed the design’s compliance with class and statutory requirements.

Both developments were announced this week at Gastech 2025 in Milan, Italy.
