HGK Shipping, a part of German shipping and logistic group HGK, has unveiled a wind-assisted river-seagoing gas tanker concept that can transport liquefied ammonia (NH3) and liquefied CO2 (LCO2).

The vessel, named Vanguard, will be equipped with a wind-assisted propulsion system (WAPS) and will be "future fuel-ready,” HGK Shipping claims.

However, the company has not yet specified which fuel will be used for propulsion in the future.

The vessel will be able to sail on rivers as well as operate in coastal waters and beyond.

It will be equipped with tanks to transport both pressurized liquefied CO2 and liquefied ammonia, meeting the growing demand to move these gases without needing to transfer the cargo between different transport modes. This is particularly beneficial for transporting hydrogen from places like Spain and Portugal and for moving captured CO2 to planned offshore fields, often located in the North Sea.
