The biofuel blend comprises 30% biodiesel derived from used cooking oil and 70% conventional high sulphur fuel oil (HSFO).

HMM will trial the biofuel blend on three of its 24,000-TEU containerships in the second half of this year.

The company trialled biofuel on its 13,100-TEU containership, HMM Dream, for the first time in 2021. The vessel, which served between Asia and the US East Coast, completed its voyage successfully.

“Biodiesel reduces greenhouse gas emissions by 80% compared to conventional fuels. Biofuels have the merit of being compatible with current ship engines without technological modification,” HMM claims.

“Based on this MoU, we expect to generate less greenhouse gas emissions and thereby contribute to limiting climate change,” HMM’s senior executive vice president Park Jinki says.
