OCCS is one of the technologies under consideration to decarbonise the shipping industry.

The system captures and stores carbon dioxide (CO2) released during a vessel's operation, ensuring it does not pollute the atmosphere.

HMM carried out a feasibility study of the system with South Korean equipment supplier Panasia, after signing a memorandum of understanding (MoU) last September.

That study showed an OCCS can be installed without changing existing equipment of the ship and that the installation does not hinder vessel operations. The carbon collected by the system becomes liquefied in a pressurised tank and can then be used for manufacturing dry ice or for other purposes.

Based on the findings of the study, HMM will partner with South Korean shipbuilder Samsung Heavy Industries and Panasia for a field test of the OCCS later this year. HMM will be in charge of operating the OCCS on its ship and the partners will offer engineering support.
