February 27, 2023

Thick fog and reduced visibility has stopped all inbound and outbound vessel traffic through the Houston Ship Channel since 12.30 local time yesterday (18.30 GMT yesterday).

At 20.30 GMT yesterday, there were 45 vessels waiting to enter the channel inbound, one outbound and no shifting vessel pending, Norton Lilly says.

There is a moderate to high risk of fog and reduced visibility forecast until Thursday, which could lead to intermittent closures of the Houston Ship Channel, resulting in more vessel congestion to build.

The channel is a key waterway for vessels going in and out of ports in the Houston area, including Galveston, Baytown and Texas City.
