Hurricane Beryl expected to disrupt operations at ports along the US Gulf Coast

July 5, 2024

Hurricane Beryl is poised to cause significant disruptions across major Texas ports and offshore locations from Sunday, as it strengthens in the Gulf of Mexico following its landfall on Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula, the National Hurricane Center (NHC) reported.

Ahead of Beryl, onshore winds may trigger surf, rip currents, and coastal flooding from eastern Mexico to Texas, starting this evening and continuing after Beryl's final landfall.

Areas further east along the northern Gulf Coast also face a threat of rip currents.

Corpus Christi is expected to feel offshore effects from Sunday, with hazardous conditions until Wednesday next week. Similarly, Houston, Freeport, Bolivar Roads, Houston, Galveston and Texas City may face strong winds from Sunday evening, which could suspend operations until Wednesday and beyond.

Beaumont, Port Arthur and Lake Charles should expect storm conditions by Tuesday, with prolonged delays as most barges from Houston arrive, a source says.

“At the moment, I am not seeing much bunker price change in the Gulf Coast ports related to the potential disruption from Hurricane Beryl,” said a trader, adding that "price impact could occur during and after the hurricane.”
