Knutsen NYK to transport LCO2 from blue ammonia production in Australia

June 16, 2023

Australian oil and gas company Pilot Energy and Norwegian Knutsen NYK Carbon Carriers (KNCC) will collaborate on a carbon capture and storage project in Australia.

Under the partnership, Pilot Energy aims to capture around 8 million mt/year of carbon dioxide (CO2) from the Kwinana Industrial Area in western Australia.

The captured CO2 will be transported to Pilot Energy's Cliff Head Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) Project facility in a liquefied form using KNCC's liquified carbon dioxide (LCO2) carrier. KNCC said earlier this month that the carrier will be fitted with a proprietary containment system that enables vessels to store and transport LCO2 at ambient temperatures.

Cliff Head CCS Project will be located off the coast of Perth in Australia. It will be a converted oil field that can store up to 1 million mt/year of CO2, with a total storage capacity of 50 million mt.

Pilot Energy is also leading the Mid West Clean Energy project, through which it aims to produce over 1.2 million mt/year of “low-cost” blue ammonia for export from Australia. The CO2 captured from this blue ammonia production plant will also be stored at the Cliff Head CCS site.
