Leclanché has been selected by Istanbul-based marine equipment maker Elkon to provide the diesel-electric hybrid Ro-Pax ferries with 1.1 megawatt hour (MWh) capacity battery storage systems.
The ferries are being built by Turkish shipbuilder Cemre Shipyard and are scheduled for completion in 2024 and 2025, respectively.
Upon completion, the ferries will serve the Scottish islands of Islay and Jura.
The batteries will “will enable the vessels to enter the ports quietly and carbon-free,” Leclanché says.
