The duo will collaborate on a pilot a green hydrogen production site in the Southern North Sea region.

“In a first for the country,” the project will demonstrate that hydrogen produced in the UK can be stored and distributed safely across the country, the companies said in a joint statement.

They will also explore the possibility of commercially deploying the technology next to offshore wind electricity production sites.

“Offshore electrolysis coupled with hydrogen storage will maximise the huge potential of offshore wind around the UK,” Lhyfe’s UK and Ireland country manager Colin Brown says.

The project is in sync with the UK government’s target to double its low carbon hydrogen production capacity up to 10 gigawatts (GW) by 2030, with almost half of it coming from green hydrogen.

According to Centrica’s managing director Martin Scargill, this project will support the UK "on its net zero journey.”
