Green electromethanol (e-methanol) is made by combining 100% biogenic carbon dioxide (CO2) with green hydrogen.

For this project, Liquid Wind will source biogenic CO2 from the Umeå-based Dåva Cogeneration biopower plant, which uses solid waste to generate electricity. E-methanol production is expected to begin in 2026.

“The transition to electrofuels in the maritime sector which uses 300 million mt of fossil fuels every year is very urgent. With electrofuel replacing today’s fossil fuels, carbon dioxide emissions can be reduced by over 90%," says Claes Fredriksson, chief executive of Liquid Wind.

Liquid Wind is already in the process of building two other e-methanol plants capable of producing a total of 150,000 mt/year of green e-methanol from 2025. It also plans to build two additional plants in the Nordic region.
