LFC has constructed ammonia storage tanks in Ulsan, where it plans to import blue and green ammonia from the Netherlands-based ammonia producer OCI. This facility will be developed further to supply ammonia-powered vessels from 2025 onwards.
Blue ammonia is a low-carbon product produced from natural gas in which carbon dioxide (CO2) is captured during production. Green ammonia is produced using green hydrogen as a feedstock.
OCI will initially supply low-carbon ammonia from its existing integrated methanol-ammonia production facility in Beaumont, Texas. The facility produces 365,000 mt/year of bio-ammonia from bio-methane.
The contract also covers future supply of blue ammonia from OCI's upcoming facility in Beaumont and green ammonia supply from its Fertiglobe project in Egypt.
The company's upcoming blue ammonia facility in Beaumont is scheduled to begin operations in 2025 and has a planned production capacity of 1.1 million mt/year.
Fertiglobe green ammonia project in Egypt has a nameplate production capacity of 90,000 mt/year of green ammonia. It is a joint venture between OCI and Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC).
