LR and Samsung Heavy Industries to work on green ammonia technology

November 18, 2024

South Korea-based shipping giant Samsung Heavy Industries and classification society Lloyd’s Register (LR) have agreed to jointly develop a floating production, storage and offloading system for green ammonia.

The system will use renewable energy, primarily from offshore wind farms in Europe, to power the electrolysis of seawater, generating green hydrogen, LR said.

This hydrogen will then be combined with nitrogen and synthesized to produce green ammonia, ready for offloading to ammonia carriers, it added.

Samsung Heavy Industries will design the system, while LR will provide technical guidance for the project, the classification society said.

The duo is optimistic about green ammonia demand to pick up "in the coming decades, particularly as a clean fuel alternative for the global shipping industry," LR's offshore business director Sean van der Post said.
