Tangier Maersk is the first of six vessels in Maersk’s new 9,000-TEU mid-size series.

The vessel is equipped with a methanol dual-fuel engine, allowing it to operate on methanol as well as conventional fuels. It will be deployed on Maersk’s East Asia-US Gulf route via the Panama Canal.

Maersk expects to take delivery of four additional vessels in this series this year, with the final vessel scheduled for early 2027.

Its existing methanol-capable fleet includes 12 vessels of 16,000 TEU, six vessels of 17,480 TEU and one 15,690-TEU container ship that has been retrofitted to run on methanol.

It also operates the 2,100-TEU methanol-capable feeder, Laura Maersk, which is currently being used for ethanol trials.

These six new deliveries are expected to expand Maersk’s methanol-capable fleet to 26 vessels by 2027.
