The company ordered ten VLACs from South Korean shipbuilder HD Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries.
Maersk Tankers has taken delivery of the first two vessels, Jane Maersk and Jessie Maersk, this year and two more are scheduled for delivery in the coming months.
The company is considering retrofitting all ten vessels to run on ammonia, although the final decision will “depend on securing commercial commitments from customers”.
The retrofit project has also been selected for support under the EU Innovation Fund.
“With ten VLACs joining our fleet, we see significant potential to support the adoption of ammonia as a marine fuel,” Maersk Tankers said.
