In total, 23 methanol-fuelled vessels were added to DNV’s Alternative Fuels Insight (AFI) database in May, DNV's senior consultant Kristian Hammer said in a social media post. Of these, ten are from the container segment, Hammer said.

This new figure takes the total number of methanol-fuelled vessels in operation and on order to 304 for delivery by 2028, up from 281 in April.

The largest share of newbuild orders for methanol-fuelled vessels are container ships (179), followed by tankers (53) and bulk carriers (24), according to the DNV’s latest update.

DNV also noted orders for two new ammonia-fuelled vessels and eight new LNG-fuelled vessels in May. Currently, there are 547 LNG-fuelled vessels in operation, with 505 vessels on order for delivery by 2028.
