The new order is for nine car carriers and three bulk carriers that will use liquefied natural gas (LNG) as the primary fuel. These systems will be used for dual-fuel marine engines, and delivery is scheduled to commence from spring next year.
The company received its first order of these systems from Imabari Shipbuilding in 2021 for six LNG-fueled car carriers.
With the new order in place, “Mitsubishi will supply a total of 18 units (15 car carriers and 3 bulk carriers) to Imabari Shipbuilding, including 2 units already delivered,” the company said.
Imabari Shipbuilding will also install LNG fuel tanks on these vessels, which are currently being manufactured at its Nishi-Tadotsu division. Mitsubishi is providing technical support to build these tanks, it said.
