Mitsubishi to supply ammonia fuel handling system for HZME's marine engine testing
Japanese firm Mitsubishi Shipbuilding has secured an order from Hitachi Zosen Marine Engine (HZME) to supply an ammonia fuel handling system for marine engine testing.

HZME, a dual licensee of German engine manufacturer Everllence and Swiss engine maker Winterthur Gas & Diesel (WinGD), will use the system to test ammonia-fuelled engines from both licensors.
The order covers Mitsubishi's ammonia supply and safety system, which combines an ammonia fuel supply system, an ammonia gas abatement system, and integrated control equipment to manage and coordinate both systems.
Under the agreement, Mitsubishi will optimise its ammonia fuel handling system to ensure compatibility with the ammonia engines developed by Everllence and WinGD. Once delivered to HZME's facility, the system will be configured and used for testing of both engine types.
As the shipping industry pursues decarbonisation, ammonia is gaining traction as an alternative marine fuel because it produces no CO2 emissions during combustion. However, its toxicity makes safe onboard handling essential, a factor Mitsubishi Shipbuilding expects will drive demand for its technology.
