The status will give MMMCZCS "a formal seat at the table" to participate in IMO committees, sub-committees and working groups, providing technical input and policy recommendations to support the development of global shipping decarbonisation regulations.

It will contribute to discussions on GHG reduction measures and energy efficiency regulations, fuel certification, life-cycle assessment and ammonia safety, the non-profit said.

According to the IMO, organisations applying for consultative status must demonstrate relevant expertise and the ability to make a meaningful contribution to its regulatory work.

MMMCZCS has been involved in a number of projects aimed at supporting the industry's transition to low- and zero-emission fuels. These include a demonstration in the Port of Rotterdam showing that ship-to-ship ammonia bunkering can be conducted safely within an active port environment under appropriate regulatory frameworks.

The organisation has also contributed to the design of a 3,500-TEU ammonia-capable container ship and the conversion of an 82,000-dwt bulk carrier to dual-fuel methanol operation.
