The methanol-fuelled vessel, Daiichi Meta Maru, is jointly owned by MOL Coastal Shipping, Tabuchi Kaiun and Niihama Kaiun Kabushiki Kaisha. It has been built by Kanasashi Heavy Industries, a part of Murakami Hide Shipbuilding Group.

The tanker will transport methanol for conglomerate Mitsubishi Corporation. It is expected to be delivered in December this year.

The vessel is “Japan's first domestic coastal vessel” to use methanol as fuel, MOL claims.
