Norwegian container tonnage provider MPC Container Ships (MPCC) has ordered six 3,700 TEU alternative fuels-ready container vessels.

The vessels will be constructed at Chinese shipyard Taizhou Sanfu Ship Engineering, MPCC said.

The containers are scheduled for delivery in the second half of 2028. Each vessel has secured a ten-year charter agreement with an unnamed global shipping company.

MPCC has yet to specify which fuel type the vessels will be designed to run on – such as green methanol or ammonia.

Ammonia/methanol-ready means the vessels won't initially be able to run on ammonia or methanol upon delivery but will be built with the potential for future retrofitting. This suggests they will initially operate on conventional fossil-based marine fuels.

Earlier in July, MPCC had placed a similar order for four ammonia/methanol-ready vessels. These 4,500 TEU container ships are expected to be delivered from the second half of 2027.
