The other partners in the project are China State Shipbuilding Company’s Shanghai Merchant Ship Design & Research Institute (SDARI), engine maker MAN Energy Solutions (MAN ES) and classification society Lloyd’s Register (LR).

LR says the vessel will be based on SDARI’s existing 8,200-TEU containership design, and that it will pave the way for MSC to adopt ammonia as the main propulsion fuel for future newbuilds.

“The application of ammonia as a marine fuel for the container ship sector will be crucial for our industry to achieve the emission reduction targets set by the IMO and this cross-supply chain collaboration marks a vital step in the maritime industry’s energy transition,” according to Nick Brown, the chief executive of Lloyd’s Register.
