New LNG bunker vessel design gets LR nod

Classification society Lloyd’s Register (LR) has approved the design of a new 12,500-cbm LNG bunkering vessel.

Chinese shipbuilder CSSC Huangpu Wenchong Shipbuilding has designed the vessel, LR said.

The vessel design incorporates IMO Type C LNG cargo tanks and has been evaluated based on a range of class notations covering gas operations, automation and other functions, LR said.

An IMO Type C tank is used on ships to transport or store liquefied gases like LNG, LPG, ammonia, and liquid carbon dioxide (LCO2) at high pressures or low temperatures.

LNG can curb CO2 emissions by about a quarter compared to conventional bunker fuels. However, its methane emissions can be 36 times more potent as a greenhouse gas (GHG) compared to carbon dioxide over a century, according to a World Bank study.
